BOOKENDS TO FAITH

by Larry Belh

from Chambers Works

And He saith unto them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men".

                                                                                                                Matthew 4:19

Christmas is a wonderful time of year to remember and rejoice that God indeed gave His only

begotten Son to be Savior of the world.

Likewise, we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ each year; and because we know that He arose from the dead, we are confident that we too will have life in God's presence for all eternity.

However, of 89 chapters in the four Gospels, only 4 have to do with Jesus' birth; and 9 concern His death and resurrection.

76 chapters of the Gospels cover the ministry and teaching of Jesus, and His call upon our lives to follow Him.

Yes, celebrating what God has done is good and delightful.  But celebrations are mere bookends to our faith.  The life of faith is the daily living, in:

                        following the Messiah

                        abiding in Him

                        taking up our cross

doing unto the least of these our brethren

preaching the gospel to every creature

                        making disciples

                        going and sinning no more

being salt and light in the world

living not by bread alone, but by every Word of God

walking by faith, not by sight

proving our love by our obedience

                        loving one another

                        studying to show ourselves approved

casting all our cares on Him

                        giving thanks in all things

our willingness to suffer for His sake

                        assembling ourselves together

doing all to the glory of God

                        [(add your own)]

Whew! Me thinks I just described abundant life in Christ.  This calls for a celebration, and then I think I'll go fishing.
